Nagpur to tie up with China city for development partnership

It will be for the first that the civic body will establish a sister city relationship with another one from a foreign country.

NAGPUR: The city is all set to become the sister city of Jinan, Municipal People’s Republic of China. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will execute an agreement with Jinan for establishment of the sister city relationship on Monday.

It will be for the first that the civic body will establish a sister city relationship with another one from a foreign country. Municipal commissioner Shravan Hardikar and director of Jinan Municipal People’s Congress Xu Changyu will sign the agreement at 3pm on Monday.

Union ministry of external affairs and ministry of foreign affairs and People’s Republic of China had executed an agreement for facilitating cooperation and linkages between cities of the two countries and states/provinces on May 20, 2013. The motive behind the agreement was to facilitate closer cooperation between the local authorities of India and China. As part of the agreement, NMC will become the sister city of Jinan.

Jinan, capital of Shandong province in eastern China, is referred to as the ‘spring city’ for its well-known 72 artesian springs inside urban areas.

Hardikar told TOI that the two cities will explore potential partnership for planning and executing developmental projects after signing the MoU. “We will cooperate in the fields of education, culture, sports, youth affairs, urban planning, waste water management, infrastructure, environment, public health and exchange of trade and commercial delegations,” he said.

The agreement will be for five years and can be extended by another five years. The two cities can part ways by giving a three months’ prior notice. However, termination of agreement will not affect the completion of projects planned between the two cities.

A team of officials from Jinan, including Liu Xi’an, secretary of standing committee of Jinan Municipal People’s Congress, Jian Dongfeng, deputy director, Jinan Municipal Bureau of Commerce, Zhang Guangyu, deputy director, foreign affairs office of Jinan Municipal Government, Bi Bohoa, section chief, Guo Yikun, divisional chief and interpreter and Zhao Ning, deputy division chief, will be present when the agreement will be signed.
