Tax for at least 55,000 properties has not been deposited in the city. Owners of these properties filed property tax returns in 2013-14 but did not pay dues in 2014-15 and recovery for 2015-16 and 2016-17 is going on.

LUDHIANA: In a bid to expedite the recovery of pending dues and achieve targets set for this financial year, MC commissioner Ghanshyam Thori has asked officials to issue recovery notices to defaulters.

Tax for at least 55,000 properties has not been deposited in the city. Owners of these properties filed property tax returns in 2013-14 but did not pay dues in 2014-15 and recovery for 2015-16 and 2016-17 is going on.

Recovery target from property tax for this financial year is Rs 80 crore. Last year, it was Rs 60 crore and officials recovered Rs 69.44 crore. If defaulters fail to pay up despite receiving recovery notices, the MC can seal their properties.

Officials have also been asked to speed up recovery of water and sewerage dues. So far, they have recovered only Rs 7.55 crore. In the corresponding period last year, recovery was estimated at Rs 11.87 crore. The commissioner has directed officials concerned to deal with defaulters stringently.

Besides, now that the scheme to regularise illegal water and sewerage connections has come to an end, officials will snap illegal connections. The MC commissioner said, “I have issued clear instructions to the officials concerned to speed up recovery. Strict action will be taken against defaulters. Properties of defaulters will be sealed and illegal water and sewerage connections will be snapped if defaulters do not clear their dues.”
