The news came as a relief for the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC), which had been working on a war footing to ensure Patna’s inclusion on the smart city list.
PATNA: Patna and six other state capitals, which missed the smart city bus in the previous two rounds, will be competing in the third round of the contest in March next year, Patna municipal commissioner Abhishek Singh said here on Thursday.
The news came as a relief for the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC), which had been working on a war footing to ensure Patna’s inclusion on the smart city list. “We were expecting that the final competition would take place in December. However, it has now been shifted to March. We would utilise this three-month extension in making our proposal better. We also have enough time now to work on the technical aspects of the project,” Singh said.
According to a notification issued by the Union ministry of urban development, all the cities competing for the third round would have to finalise their draft papers by March 9. On March 14, markings would be done and then the draft papers would be uploaded online for public viewing. On March 25, state level high-powered steering committee would approve the proposal, which would then be sent to the Centre.
Singh said the draft was being prepared. “We will incorporate the suggestions of people before sending the draft to the Centre,” he added.
Sources said Patnaites have voted for retrofitting of around 835 acres of area around Gandhi Maidan under area-based development category. In pan city development category, people have demanded better transportation, traffic and e-municipality.
Initially, Patna could not even make it to the list of 100 proposed smart cities. Three cities from Bihar which made entries included Muzaffarpur, Biharsharif and Bhagalpur. In the first round, the three selected cities from Bihar could not make it to the list of top 20 cities. After that a fast track was organised and Bhagalpur “luckily” qualified in it. In the second round too, neither Biharsharif nor Muzaffarpur could make it to the list.
